Sildenafil or Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used for erectile dysfunction that prolongs nitric-oxide-driven cGMP signaling in penile smooth muscle, improving blood flow during sexual stimulation without increasing libido or producing an erection in the absence of arousal.

Key Information

  • For most adults treated for erectile dysfunction, the usual starting dose is 50 mg approximately one hour before sexual activity; depending on effectiveness, adverse effects and individual medical factors, the dose may be reduced to 25 mg or increased to 100 mg, with 100 mg representing the maximum recommended single ED dose and no more than one dose recommended per day. Sildenafil can be taken from approximately 30 minutes to four hours before planned sexual activity.
  • Sildenafil is absorbed fairly quickly. Under fasting conditions, maximum plasma concentrations are generally reached within 30–120 minutes, with a median of about 60 minutes, while the terminal half-life of sildenafil and its major active metabolite is approximately four hours. A high-fat meal can delay the time to peak concentration by about 60 minutes and reduce peak concentration by roughly 29%, which is one reason the same dose may feel less predictable after a large meal.
  • Sildenafil has a substantial clinical evidence base in erectile dysfunction. In a pooled analysis of 14 flexible-dose trials involving more than 2,000 men, 57% of intercourse attempts were successful with sildenafil versus 21% with placebo, while 83% of sildenafil-treated men achieved at least one successful intercourse attempt during treatment compared with 45% receiving placebo.
  • Moving from 50 mg to 100 mg can improve erectile response in some patients, but the higher dose is not simply a “stronger and therefore better” version. Fixed-dose trials showed a dose-related increase in several adverse effects: at 100 mg, headache was reported by 28%, dyspepsia by 17%, abnormal vision by 11% and nasal congestion by 9% of participants.
  • Sildenafil produces systemic vasodilation in addition to its effect on erectile tissue. A 100 mg dose in healthy volunteers produced an average maximum blood-pressure reduction of about 8/5 mmHg, but the fall can become substantially more dangerous when sildenafil is combined with nitrate drugs; organic nitrates and the guanylate-cyclase stimulator riociguat are therefore contraindicated with sildenafil.
  • Alpha blockers, several antihypertensive drugs and medicines that strongly inhibit CYP3A4 can change the safety profile of sildenafil. Older age, severe renal impairment and hepatic impairment can also increase drug exposure, which is why 25 mg may be selected as a starting dose in some patients instead of automatically beginning with 50 or 100 mg.
  • An erection that persists for more than four hours requires immediate medical attention. Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes and sudden reduction or loss of hearing are also reasons to stop sildenafil and seek urgent medical assessment rather than waiting to see whether the symptom disappears.
  • Price differences in Mexico can be substantial even when the active ingredient and strength are the same. Recent October 2026 online listings included generic Sildenafil 50 mg, four tablets, at MXN 79.01, compared with Viagra 50 mg, four tablets, at MXN 804.44 at Farmacias Guadalajara; Farmacias del Ahorro listed generic Sildenafil 100 mg, four tablets, at MXN 239, while its four-tablet Viagra 100 mg presentation was listed at MXN 1,029. These are retailer-specific online prices and can change with promotions, stock and location.

What You Need to Know About Sildenafil in Mexico

Viagra entered medical use in 1998 and changed the treatment of erectile dysfunction because it offered an oral medication that could improve erectile response without injections, implanted devices or direct application of medication to penile tissue. Its active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, belongs to the PDE5 inhibitor group, which later came to include tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil. Today sildenafil is available in both the original Viagra presentation and a very large number of generic products, so patients are much more likely to encounter the name Sildenafil than they were during Viagra’s first years on the market.

The drug does not initiate the sexual response by itself. During arousal, nitric oxide released in penile tissue stimulates production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP, which relaxes smooth muscle and allows increased blood flow into the corpora cavernosa. PDE5 normally breaks cGMP down. Sildenafil temporarily inhibits that enzyme, allowing the naturally generated signal to persist longer and making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection when adequate sexual stimulation is already present.

This explains one of the most frequent misunderstandings surrounding Viagra. Taking 50 or 100 mg does not mean that an erection will begin automatically at a fixed number of minutes after swallowing the tablet, nor does a tablet create sexual desire in somebody who is not aroused. The medication supports a physiological pathway that has already been activated; timing, stimulation, vascular function, anxiety, food intake, alcohol and the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction can all influence what the patient experiences.

How Should 50 mg and 100 mg Sildenafil Be Compared?

For most patients, 50 mg is the standard starting point for on-demand treatment. The prescribing information permits adjustment down to 25 mg or up to 100 mg according to response and tolerability, and sildenafil may generally be taken approximately 30 minutes to four hours before sexual activity. The recommended maximum frequency remains once daily, regardless of whether the previous tablet seemed ineffective.

The distinction between 50 and 100 mg deserves more attention than it sometimes receives. A patient who obtains an adequate erection with 50 mg does not gain an automatic therapeutic advantage by switching to 100 mg. Higher exposure may improve erectile rigidity or consistency in some men who have an incomplete response to the lower dose, and controlled studies have shown greater improvement in erectile-function measurements with 100 mg in certain groups, but increasing the dose also increases exposure to adverse effects.

In the fixed-dose Viagra trials, for example, headache increased from 21% at 50 mg to 28% at 100 mg, dyspepsia from 9% to 17%, abnormal vision from 2% to 11%, and nasal congestion from 4% to 9%. Those figures do not mean that every patient will experience more adverse effects after moving to 100 mg, but they demonstrate why the highest available tablet strength should not automatically become the starting dose.

A lower starting dose may be considered when Sildenafil exposure is expected to be greater. The prescribing information specifically identifies older patients, severe renal impairment and hepatic impairment among circumstances in which 25 mg may be appropriate, and dose selection can also change when interacting medications are present.

How Long Does Sildenafil Take to Work?

Sildenafil is absorbed relatively quickly, but there is no exact minute at which every patient should expect an erectile response. In fasting subjects, peak plasma concentrations occur between approximately 30 and 120 minutes, with a median around one hour. This corresponds reasonably well with the traditional instruction to take sildenafil about an hour before sexual activity, although the approved dosing window is considerably broader.

The drug and its principal active metabolite have terminal half-lives of approximately four hours. Clinical testing has demonstrated erectile effects for up to four hours after a dose, although the response later in that period is generally weaker than it is closer to the two-hour point. A four-hour period of pharmacological activity should never be interpreted as a four-hour erection; the erectile response still depends on stimulation and normally subsides after sexual activity ends. Food can alter this timing considerably. When sildenafil is taken with a high-fat meal, the average time to maximum concentration is delayed by approximately one hour and peak concentration falls by about 29%. A man who regularly obtains a satisfactory response on an empty stomach may therefore believe that the medication has “stopped working” when the same tablet is taken immediately after a large, fatty dinner.

How Effective Is Sildenafil for Erectile Dysfunction?

Sildenafil does not work for every cause or every severity of erectile dysfunction, but the response documented in controlled trials is large enough to explain why it remains one of the principal oral ED treatments decades after its introduction. In an early randomized trial, 69% of intercourse attempts during the final four weeks of treatment were successful among men receiving sildenafil, compared with 22% among those receiving placebo. A separate systematic review combining 14 flexible-dose trials found successful intercourse in 57% of attempts with sildenafil versus 21% with placebo, and 83% of men taking sildenafil achieved at least one successful intercourse attempt during treatment compared with 45% receiving placebo.

Response still varies considerably from patient to patient. Erectile dysfunction caused mainly by performance anxiety is different from ED associated with advanced diabetes, extensive pelvic surgery, severe vascular disease, neurologic injury or multiple concurrent medications. The presence of a statistically effective drug does not eliminate those differences, and a partial response can sometimes provide useful information about the underlying erectile problem.

Is Sildenafil Safe for Everyone?

Sildenafil has been used by millions of patients, but a familiar medication is not the same thing as a medication that is appropriate for everybody. Cardiovascular status deserves particular attention because sexual activity itself increases cardiac workload and because sildenafil produces vasodilation and a temporary reduction in blood pressure.

Current Sildenafil labeling advises against use when sexual activity is medically inadvisable because of cardiovascular status. It also notes the absence of controlled safety data in several higher-risk groups, including patients who have experienced myocardial infarction, stroke or a life-threatening arrhythmia within the preceding six months, patients with resting blood pressure below 90/50 mmHg or above 170/110 mmHg, and patients with heart failure or coronary disease producing unstable angina. These situations require individualized medical judgment instead of self-selection of an ED dose.

Erectile dysfunction itself can also be medically informative. Diabetes, hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia, obesity and coronary artery disease damage many of the same vascular systems required for normal erectile function. New or progressively worsening ED, especially when accompanied by exertional chest discomfort, shortness of breath or a substantial cardiovascular risk history, should not automatically be reduced to a tablet-strength question.

Which Sildenafil Drug Interactions Are Most Important?

The nitrate interaction remains the central safety issue with sildenafil. Nitroglycerin tablets, sprays and patches, as well as longer-acting nitrate preparations containing isosorbide, increase nitric-oxide-mediated vasodilation. Sildenafil amplifies the downstream cGMP pathway, so taking the two together can cause an excessive and potentially dangerous decrease in blood pressure. The same prohibition applies to riociguat, a soluble guanylate-cyclase stimulator.

This is particularly important because a patient taking sildenafil for ED may later develop chest pain and encounter nitroglycerin in an emergency setting. Medical personnel need to know that sildenafil has been taken. A patient should not attempt to manage this interaction by simply spacing the drugs a little farther apart without medical direction.

Alpha blockers used for prostate symptoms or hypertension can also lower blood pressure. When sildenafil is prescribed to a patient taking an alpha blocker, the person should already be stable on alpha-blocker therapy, and current labeling recommends beginning sildenafil at 25 mg in that situation.

Sildenafil is metabolized predominantly through CYP3A4. Strong inhibitors of this pathway can increase sildenafil exposure, which is why a medication review should include prescription drugs, antiviral therapy and other medicines capable of significantly affecting CYP3A4 metabolism. Multiple ED drugs should not be stacked together in an attempt to obtain a stronger erection; the safety and efficacy of combining sildenafil with other PDE5 inhibitors have not been established.

What Side Effects Are Most Common?

Headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion and temporary visual disturbances are among the adverse effects most strongly associated with sildenafil. They are pharmacologically understandable: PDE5 inhibition causes vasodilation outside penile tissue as well, while sildenafil has some activity against PDE6 in the retina, which helps explain temporary changes in color perception or light sensitivity.

The fixed-dose trials also show why dose selection affects tolerability:

Adverse effect25 mg50 mg100 mgPlacebo
Headache16%21%28%7%
Flushing10%19%18%2%
Dyspepsia3%9%17%2%
Abnormal vision1%2%11%1%
Nasal congestion4%4%9%2%

The visual effects reported in these trials were generally mild to moderate and transient, most often involving color tinge, increased sensitivity to light or blurred vision. These familiar temporary effects are different from sudden major loss of vision, which requires immediate medical attention.

Which Sildenafil Symptoms Require Urgent Medical Care?

Priapism is uncommon, but it is one of the adverse events that should never be managed by waiting until the next morning. An erection that persists for more than four hours requires immediate medical assessment because prolonged ischemia can injure erectile tissue and lead to permanent loss of erectile function. Patients with sickle-cell disease, multiple myeloma, leukemia or structural abnormalities of the penis may have additional reasons for caution.

Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes also requires the medication to be stopped and medical care obtained. Rare post-marketing reports have involved non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, although the presence of reports after sildenafil use does not by itself establish that sildenafil caused every event.

The same principle applies to sudden hearing reduction or hearing loss, particularly when tinnitus or dizziness occurs at the same time. These reports are uncommon and may involve other medical risk factors, but labeling advises prompt evaluation instead of continuing subsequent doses and assuming that the symptom is harmless.

Why Can Sildenafil Appear to Stop Working?

One unsuccessful dose is not enough to conclude that a patient has become resistant to sildenafil. Timing is often the first issue to examine. The tablet may have been taken too late, directly after a heavy meal, after substantial alcohol intake or at a point when the patient expected a pharmacological erection without adequate sexual stimulation.

The erectile disorder itself may also have changed. Progression of diabetes, worsening vascular disease, a new antihypertensive or psychiatric medication, pelvic surgery, hormonal abnormalities, neurologic disease and increasing performance anxiety can all alter a response that was previously satisfactory. Repeatedly moving to 100 mg without examining the underlying change can increase adverse effects without correcting the reason erections have become less reliable.

Technique and expectations also play a role. Sildenafil facilitates the erectile response; it does not guarantee that every sexual attempt will result in the same degree of rigidity. Controlled trials measure improvement across groups and repeated attempts, while an individual patient experiences the drug under changing conditions of sleep, food, stress, stimulation and health.

When a properly selected sildenafil dose repeatedly fails despite adequate timing and stimulation, other options can be evaluated. These may include another PDE5 inhibitor, vacuum erection devices, intracavernosal therapy or investigation of vascular, hormonal, neurologic and psychological causes. Testosterone treatment should not be added automatically unless testosterone deficiency has actually been established and is clinically relevant.

Brand Viagra or Sildenafil: Is There a Medical Difference?

Viagra is the original branded Sildenafil product, while generic products contain the same active pharmaceutical ingredient and are available from many manufacturers. An authorized generic sildenafil tablet of the same labeled dosage is expected to deliver Sildenafil within the regulatory standards applicable to that product; the fact that a tablet has a different color, shape, coating or box design does not make it pharmacologically different from sildenafil simply because it does not resemble the familiar blue Viagra tablet.

Inactive ingredients and manufacturing presentation can differ, however, and a patient with a particular excipient sensitivity should still check the actual product information. Manufacturer, batch identification, strength and expiration date also deserve attention because erectile-dysfunction medicines have long been a target for counterfeit and illegally manufactured products.

Price can create an especially large visual distinction between the original brand and generic alternatives in Mexico, but a tenfold difference in retail price does not mean that the more expensive tablet contains ten times more sildenafil or produces ten times the effect. Brand pricing, manufacturer, pharmacy margin, package size, promotional discounts and procurement arrangements all contribute to the final retail figure.

How Much Does Sildenafil Cost in Mexico?

There is no single Mexican price for Sildenafil. The same strength can be sold as original Viagra, a national or international generic, a pharmacy’s private-label product or another branded sildenafil presentation, and the resulting price differences can be substantial.

Online prices checked in October 2026 illustrate the range. Farmacias Guadalajara listed Pharmalife Sildenafil 50 mg, four tablets, at MXN 79.01, while Viagra 50 mg, four tablets, was MXN 804.44 in the same chain’s online catalog. Its Viagra 100 mg four-tablet listing showed an online promotional price of MXN 886.95.

Farmacias del Ahorro showed the same separation from another angle. Its private-label Sildenafil 100 mg, four tablets, was listed at MXN 239, while Viagra 100 mg, four tablets, was MXN 1,029. A single private-label 100 mg sildenafil tablet was listed at approximately MXN 72.50, compared with about MXN 303 for a single 100 mg Viagra tablet.

These numbers should be treated as current retail examples, not permanent price quotations. Mexican pharmacy websites frequently display online-only prices, discounts and location-dependent availability, and the amount charged at a physical branch can differ from the amount shown online.

Why Is Sildenafil Cheaper Than Viagra in Mexico?

The largest price difference is usually associated with the brand rather than the number of milligrams. Once patent exclusivity and other barriers to generic competition are no longer controlling the market, multiple manufacturers can produce sildenafil, allowing pharmacies to source several competing versions of the same active ingredient. That competition is visible in Mexican retail listings. A four-tablet 50 mg generic product at approximately MXN 79 and a four-tablet branded Viagra presentation at more than MXN 800 represent the same active ingredient and nominal strength but very different commercial products. The same pattern appears at 100 mg, where private-label sildenafil can cost only a fraction of the original brand’s retail price.

Price alone, however, is not enough to establish product quality. Sildenafil should come from an identifiable manufacturer and legitimate supply channel, with the dosage strength, lot information and expiration data present on the package. An unusually inexpensive drug purchased from an anonymous seller is a different proposition from an inexpensive generic sold through an established pharmacy.

What Determines the Sildenafil Price on Mexican Pharmacy King?

Mexican Pharmacy King may carry Sildenafil under different manufacturers, options and package quantities, so the price shown for one listing should not be assumed to apply to every product in the catalog.

For the product currently displayed on this page, the listed manufacturer is generic / varies by current supply source, while the current catalog price is $18.99. The dose and number of tablets should always be checked before comparing that figure with another pharmacy because comparing a one-tablet 100 mg presentation with a four- or eight-tablet package can make two prices look much farther apart than they actually are on a per-tablet basis.

A patient comparing Viagra 100 mg with Generic Sildenafil 100 mg should not assume that the large price difference reflects a corresponding difference in dose or expected PDE5 activity.

What Should Be Checked Before Buying Sildenafil in Mexico?

  1. The package should identify Sildenafil citrate as the active ingredient, state the strength per tablet and identify the manufacturer or authorization holder. Batch or lot information and an expiration date should also be present. A recognizable tablet color is not an adequate authenticity test because sildenafil is produced in many legitimate physical forms and counterfeit products can imitate the appearance of Viagra.
  2. The source deserves the same attention as the box. ED medication has an unusually large unregulated online market because buyers may be reluctant to discuss sexual health in person, which makes sildenafil attractive to counterfeiters and anonymous sellers. Purchasing through an identifiable pharmacy and retaining the original packaging gives the patient far more information about the actual product than receiving loose tablets or an unmarked blister.
  3. It is also useful to verify whether the product being compared is standard oral sildenafil for erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is used in other medical contexts, particularly pulmonary arterial hypertension, under different brands, strengths and dosing schedules. The presence of the word “sildenafil” on a package does not mean that every sildenafil product should be used according to the ED dosing schedule.

Erectile Dysfunction Can Be More Than a Sexual Problem

Sildenafil can treat the erectile symptom without explaining why that symptom began. Erectile function depends on vascular supply, intact nerves, hormonal status, medication exposure, psychological state and the local anatomy of the penis, so ED may arise from one factor or from several acting together.

A man whose erectile function has changed gradually over several years in parallel with diabetes or vascular disease presents a different clinical picture from a younger man who has normal spontaneous erections but loses rigidity in specific situations because of severe performance anxiety. Sildenafil may help both, but the diagnostic questions behind treatment are not identical.

This becomes particularly important when ED is new, progressive or accompanied by other symptoms. The useful question is not only whether a 50 or 100 mg tablet can produce an adequate erection, but whether diabetes, hypertension, vascular disease, medication effects, endocrine abnormalities, neurologic disease or psychological factors also require attention.
